about

A musical journey around the world, starting in Central America and travelling east to Africa, eastern Europe, Asia, and South America before returning to the Caribbean. It is also a journey through musical textures, beginning and ending with exuberant dance rhythms, with a number of more reflective pieces in the middle.

The Grand Union band is a melting pot where different musicians and musical styles rub together, helping establish the musical relationships that inspire the music of Tony Haynes's larger-scale work for the Grand Union Orchestra.

Whether based in London, Lisbon or Melbourne, each of the different combinations of musicians reflects the cosmopolitan nature of the local scene. Another characteristic of all the Grand Union bands is versatility: most of the performers are multi-instrumentalists, which makes for an absorbing stage presentation as well as an ever-changing sound.

There is no pretence at purity of style: the authenticity of this music lies in the creative personality of the individual musicians.
