about

The Ballad of the Navigators. The opening melody is the oldest surviving piece of Portuguese music, dating from the 14th century: a woman laments the absence of her lover, a sailor.

The ballad's verses are a poem by Manuel Alegre, a love song where a sailor’s life is a metaphor for freedom, followed by a collage of folk songs.

lyrics

O wave of the swelling sea
My love has gone from me
Please God may he soon return

Meu amor é marinheiro
E mora no alto mar
Seus braços são como o vento
Ninguém os pode amarrar

Meu amor disse que eu tinha
Na boca um gusto a saudade
E uns cabelos onde nascem
Os ventos e a Liberdade

Meu amor é marinheiro
E mora no alto mar
Coração que nasceu livre
Não se pode acorrentar

Ondas do mare de Vigo
Se vistes meu amigo
E ai Deus! se verrá cedo?

Ai ó meu São João
Ai ó meu belo marinheiro
Lovai-me na vossa barca...

O milho da nossa terra
É tratado com carino
Ai é a riqueza do povo...

Eito fora, eito for a
Ai e ó ai e ó ai...

Blow the wind southerly, southerly, southerly
Blow bonny breezes my lover to me...

Great sea, winds and great weather
Call me
They call me...
