about

When forests become ships: a lament for three voices and flugelhorn, featuring verses from two of the best-known poems by Manuel Alegre, the Portuguese poet (and later politician).

The song articulates some of Alegre's favourite themes – the country which turned its back on the land in search of Empire, and the enormous squandering of human resources spread too thinly across the map.

lyrics

Desta nova e fatal agricultura
Colher no mar o fruto nunca semeado

Your country once was a land of trees
Till one day the sea opened up like a road
Then tree by tree became ship and ship a plough
To harvest a crop that you did not sow

As ship by ship stole through the oceans
And time slipped the anchor of your soul
As war by war a stronger power you sought to gain
You lost your country and yourself from island to island...

Eras tu que morrias nas batalhas
Enredado nas armas que tecias
Malhas onde sem glória te perdias

Eras tu que cantavas dentro das palavras
Tecendo desarmado o canto e as armas

It was you who were dying
Tangled up in ambition
Losing self without honour
Music and war, music and war
